The Black CrowesChris Robinson joins Kyle Meredith to talk about band’s new album, Happiness Bastards, which marks their first collection of new material since 2009. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Inspired by the band’s experience of touring Shake Your Money Maker for its 30th anniversary, Robinson explains how he attempted to take his lyrics to a new level for Happiness Bastards. The renewed vigor led to the band cranking away in the studio, leaving many songs from the Happiness Bastards sessions on the editing room floor. The artist hints that while these cuts didn’t fit with this album, they could potentially show up on another project.

“We focused and made a rock ‘n’ roll record, but we still have 20 songs laying around that are more like Brothers of a Feather,” Robinson says. “Maybe we make a record of things that’s not The Black Crowes; maybe we make a Chris and Rich Robinson record that is something different. The only reason that would be interesting or that would even work is because for the first time since maybe the early ’90s is we definitely know what The Black Crowes are.”

He goes on to explain how he sought sought to harness the dark romance of rock ‘n’ roll through stories and images, all while leaving room for the listener’s own interpretation. To do this, he looked towards some of the greats, including Bob Dylan, whom he calls “the greatest songwriter of all time.”
