Oscars 2024: Oppenheimer Wins Best Picture

Oppenheimer has won Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars. The Christopher Nolan film bested nine other movies at the March 10 ceremony: American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Past Lives, Poor Things, and The Zone of Interest.

In her acceptance speech, Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas (who is also married to Nolan) said:

Wow, I think any of us who make movies know that you kind of dream of this moment. You know you do. I could deny it but I have been dreaming of this moment for so long, but it seemed so unlikely that it would ever finally happen.

The reason this movie was the movie it was was because Chris Nolan. He is singular, he is brilliant, and I am so grateful for you. But, as I said, the thing that’s fantastic about our jobs is that it’s about collaboration, it’s about teamwork.

Oppenheimer had a big night at the Oscars besides taking the top honor. The movie went on to win Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson), in addition to Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography (Hoyte Van Hoytema), and Best Film Editing (Jennifer Lame).

Earlier in the evening, Billie Eilish and Finneas won Best Original Song for “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie. The siblings played the song live at the award ceremony with additional backing from an orchestra. Fellow Barbie cut “I’m Just Ken” also came to life onstage thanks to a theatrical performance by Ryan Gosling and dozens of Kens, as did fellow Best Original Song nominees Becky G’s “The Fire Inside,” Jon Batiste’s “It Never Went Away,” and Scott George and the Osage Tribal Singers’ “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People).”
