Hamish Linklater joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Manhunt, an Apple TV+ conspiracy thriller about one of the best-known but least understood crimes in history — the astonishing hunt for John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Alongside Tobias Menzies (who portrays Edwin Stanton, the US Secretary of War at the time) and Lily Taylor (as Mary Todd Lincoln), Linklater plays the 16th president in the show, showing a side of the historical figure not commonly represented in portrayals of his life. “We have his words, we have a real nice idea of how he was as a statesman,” says Linklater. “But how he was on the domestic front — maybe there was more creative latitude, but it was essential for the show to show what motivated his friend Edwin Stanton to chase down his killer with such ferocity and then to defend the legacy with such unimpugnable integrity.”

He also discusses the struggle he faced when looking for the right voice to use and capturing Lincoln’s surprisingly “feet on the desk” attitude, as he wanted to keep things fresh in a story so often told.

Linklater also nods to his upcoming directorial effort Downtown Owl, which he worked on with his partner Lily Rabe. “It’s the sort of thing where you say, ‘I co-directed something with my partner,’ and they say, ‘I have a great lawyer for you, it’ll be a soft landing,’” he jokes. “But it was a totally wonderful experience.”
