Billie Eilish and Finneas Win Song of the Year for “What Was I Made For?” at 2024 Grammys

Billie Eilish and her brother and producer, Finneas, have won Song of the Year at the 2024 Grammys for the Barbie the Album track “What Was I Made For?” The song, which also got nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance and won the award for Best Song Written for for Visual Media this year, snagged the trophy over a field of nominees that also included another song from the Barbie movie soundtrack: Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night.” “I’m shocked out of my balls,” Eilish said as she accepted the trophy with Finneas. The siblings performed “What Was I Made For?” on the Grammys stage earlier in the evening.

Eilish seemed startled while accepting the award for Song of the Year. “Whoa. Whoops. Yikes. Oh my goodness,” she said. Eilish continued:

Damn, that’s stupid, guys! Whoa. Literally, like, I was looking at everyone’s faces and I leaned over and I was like, “Not a chance!” Yo, I just want to say, everybody in this category, that was a crazy list of incredible people, incredible artists, incredible music.

I feel crazy right now. Damn dude. Wow. I don’t even—this is crazy. I’m shocked out of my balls. Thank you to the members of the Recording Academy. Thank you to my brother, who’s my best friend in the world and makes me the person that I am today. Thank you to Greta Gerwig for making the best movie of the year.

Rounding out the nominees for Song of the Year this year were Taylor Swift (“Anti-Hero”), SZA (“Kill Bill”), Lana Del Rey (“A&W”), Miley Cyrus (“Flowers”), Olivia Rodrigo (“Vampire”), and Jon Batiste (“Butterfly”). Barbie the Album, led by producers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, won Best Compilation and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.

Eilish has a career total of 25 Grammy nominations. She took home five Grammys in 2019 and also swept the big four categories that year: Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year. Last year, she was nominated for two awards, Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Music Film. She released her most recent album, Happier Than Ever, in 2021.
